Turas fundamentals

The building blocks of great products

As you begin designing a new product or service using the Design System it is important to keep the following design principles in mind:

  • useful - address real user needs with functions that are relevant to user's tasks and context
  • consistent - create a familiar and intuitive experience
  • efficient - streamline flows and help people work smarter and faster
  • simple - remove any unnecessary elements and keep the most commonly used options visible

Along with accessibility, these design principles form the foundation of this Design System.

User experience

We want to create great experiences for our users. By involving your users throughout the design process you are more likely to create a product that truly meets their needs. Before you start designing a new product start with user research.

Accessibility

To ensure your product can be used by as many people as possible it must be accessible. Accessibility regulations came into force for public sector bodies in 2018.  Digital products for the public sector must meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards. Learn more about accessibility.

Framework

This Design System is based on the Bootstrap 5, the popular front-end development framework.

Page templates

The key page templates are:

Components

Components are the building blocks of digital products. Use them within the page templates to create your product. We provide guidance on how to use them as well as the HTML and helper code for most of them.

Take a look at our components.

If you want to add new styles or patterns not covered here we urge you to get in touch with the Experience team.

Forms

Forms play a key role in many Turas applications. Find out more about form styles and components.

Writing content

The Turas Style Guide includes guidance on writing content. We aim to write in plain English, creating succinct and inclusive content. Follow the guidance on writing content.
