Accessibility roadmap

Colin Sanders, Principal Lead (Experience) said

"We intend to ensure that all components in Turas applications are derived from one source (the Turas design system) and our aim is for that source to be fully accessible. "

Design system roadmap

This design system was launched in November 2023 and replaced the existing Turas Style Guide version 2.

Applications in development using the new design system include:

  • Additional Cost of Teaching (ACT)
  • Scottish Online Appraisal Resource (SOAR) (expected launch date 31/03/24)

Accessibility changes planned for the design system

In the short term we plan to:

  • pursue and implement further ARIA improvements to existing design system components and ensure ARIA compliance for new components
  • make improvements to rules on what ARIA attributes to use in Alerts and other components
  • add rules on ARIA for empty search results to ensure that screen readers can read when no results are returned
  • review design system to ensure compliance with upcoming guidance on WCAG2.2
  • implement new guidance on accessibility for every component

Going forward

In the short to medium term we plan to:

  • take opportunities to proactively ask existing users of applications to feedback on accessibility issues when completing Turas surveys
  • use these interactions to request volunteers to form groups to be consulted with on these topics
  • seek out advice from specific groups of users with accessibility challenges to feedback on how they interact with Turas applications
