Accessibility is everyone's responsibility
Accessibility isn’t just the job of designers and developers; it’s everyone’s responsibility. Each person in a multidisciplinary team plays a role in creating a product that’s usable by all people, including those with disabilities.
At every stage of a project, accessibility must be a priority, and each team member should know how to contribute to a more inclusive experience.
For those working on Turas applications, we’ve outlined specific accessibility considerations for different roles within the team.
How your role can contribute to accessibility:
- content creators: ensure content is written in a clear, structured, and accessible way, considering readability, alternative text, and media accessibility.
- designers: develop accessible designs that prioritize clarity, usability, and inclusivity (e.g., color contrast, legible fonts, and intuitive layout).
- developers: write code that meets accessibility standards, ensuring compatibility with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technologies.
- procurement teams: verify that any external tools or services used comply with accessibility guidelines and standards.
- product owners: set accessibility priorities within the product roadmap and ensure teams have the resources and support to meet them.
- testers: perform both manual and automated accessibility tests to detect issues early, ensuring the product meets accessibility standards.
- user researchers: gather insights from diverse user groups, including those with disabilities, to ensure the product meets the needs of all users and inform inclusive design decisions.
Key Accessibility Principles
- embed accessibility from start to finish—integrating it into the planning, design, development, and testing phases
- define the "definition of done" for accessibility, ensuring all features meet the required standards before release
- set measurable goals, such as WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, to ensure accessibility is tracked and achieved
- foster collaboration across teams to create a seamless, accessible experience for all users
- view accessibility as an ongoing process, not a one-off checklist. the focus should always be on continuous improvement
